My son is about to turn 3 (in just a couple of days). I have had lots of friends and relatives ask what are the best gifts and toys for a 3 year old boy as they don't have a clue what to get him. Therefore I have compiled a list of top gifts and toys for 3 year old boys based on the toys my son currently loves and what he has asked for.
Read on for lots of suggestions and ideas of the best gifts and toys for 3 year old boys
Top gifts for 3 year old boys : Cars and Vehicles
The best toys you can buy a 3 year old boy are quite often car and vehicle related. My son is car crazy. He can't have too many. He has lots and lots and puts different ones in his pocket when we go out and takes one to bed at night.
His grandma is buying him a toy garage for his birthday which is he so excited about. So a garage is a top toy. The plan toy garage opposite is durable and has good reviews on Amazon. His other grandma is buying him a big red fire engine which he is just as excited about. The fire engine opposite can squirt water and has lights and sounds.
Other great vehicle gift ideas include remote control cars, racing tracks, diggers, trucks (these are also great for using in the sandbox and in the dirt!!).Dump trucks are brilliant. They can be used to cart things around the house and are great for outdoor play. 3 year old boys will love them.

Outdoor gifts and toys for 3 year old boys
3 year old boys are often very active (my son is always on the move). Other great toys to get 3 year old boys are toys they can use outdoors.
We are buying my son is first scooter for his 3rd birthday. He has been very interested in other children's scooters and I think he will love it. I am expecting him to take a while to get used to using it but I know it won't be long before we are finished practising in the back yard and will be out and about in the playground.
The Mini Kick Scooter featured opposite is great for kids age 3-5 and the winner of the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold and Platinum Award Seals 2009
Other great outdoor toys ideas include stomp rockets. These are great fun. We actually bought one for my son last Summer (6 months ago) but all kids will love these kits (and probably most parents will queue up ready to have a go too. You stomp on the pump at the bottom of the rocket to see how high you can shoot it in the sky.
Other outdoor toy ideas incllude: slides, playhouse, playtents, trampolines, tball sets, bowling games, infatable pools and balls.

A nice big sandbox is another great gift. 3 year old boys love playing in the sand. Get plenty of toys to play with, buckets, spades, trucks and diggers.
Educational toys for three year old boys
My son has the Melissa and Doug See and Spell featured opposite. He was given it a couple of months ago and this has been a great buy. He loves fitting finding and fitting in the letters next to the pictures. It has been a good toy to help him recognise the letters. He is very engaged with the toy and he concentrates hard. As he gets older it will also help him to spell certain words. The reviews on Amazon are good too.
Jigsaws make great educational toys for parents, carers and 3 year old boys to do together. Choose a jigsaw with a picture they are interested in such as fire engines or a favorite TV character.
Great toys for 3 year old boys
Another of the best toys for 3 year old boys include marble runs. My son received one of these a couple of months ago and its; a toy he plays with nearly everyday. We have had to help him build the marble runs at the beginning but it's quite fun for adults to have a go as well. Now he is turning 3 he has started to be able to put the pieces together and build them himself.

Games for 3 year old boys
There are some great games for 3 year old boys.
My son has Tomy Pop Up Pirate and this is a fun game. Put in the swords and the winner is the one who makes the pirate pop up. It's simple and fun and great for teaching little ones how to take turns. However, my son loves it so much he sometimes plays on his own.
More gift ideas for 3 year old boys
Don't just think about traditional boys toys when buying for 3 year old boys. There are lots of other toys my son loves too. At the playgroup he goes to he quite often plays with the cash register. He is very interested in money and likes playing shop. Look for a cash register with a credit card like the one opposite as they love using that too.
Another idea is a tea set. There is one he plays with a lot at his Grandmas house. He really enjoys making tea for everybody and pretending to drink it. He enjoys it so much we have asked a relative to buy him his own for his birthday.
Good gift idea for 3 year old boys : train sets
My son has had a wooden train set since he was 2 1/2 and he still loves it so it would make a fantastic gift for a 3 year old boy. My 3 year old loves putting the tracks together and will play for a long time pushing the trains around it. Its also a toy that they have at the playgroup we go to and all the boys hover around it.
Fisher Price also do a good range of trains which 3 year old boys love to play with called Geotrax. There is one featured opposite.
Books for 3 Year Olds
There are lots of great books for 3 year olds that make nice gifts.
I love reading with my son and some of his favorite books are interactive ones. Books where you can lift flaps and press buttons are always popular. You can also get puppet books. Children love watching adults use the puppet and tell the story. Afterwards chidren can have a go to.
Other books which make great gifts include timeless tales such as The Hungry Caterpillar.

My nephew's birthday is coming next week. Thanks for helping me.
I agree boy like car toys and outdoor toys as you mention. great ideas
I agree with zeebees - our children all love their daddy's ipod touch. But I would never give them one of their own to play with. That would be a recipe for disaster!
This is the most accurate, relevant, and best toy suggestion page I have seen on the internet. So often, it's what's new or cool, not what this age group of boys truly likes! Thanks for the additional suggestions.
Running Bike for Kids is an excellent first step for even kids as young as a year and half - 3 years old to learning how to ride a real bicycle
OMG ipod for a three yr old!
My son has had an iTouch since he was one and now has an iPad. Yes they may be expensive toys but he love it and learns so much by using it.
Am I totally out of touch?! I'm 32, and grew up playing outside with rocks, insects...and of course stuffed animals and dolls. All those things trigger multiple senses: tactility, smells, sounds, whatever, which contributed to my creative growth as a person. How does and Ipod/pad do that?!!

train sets will entertain for a week or so, same with geotraks, scooters, any assorted toy, board game, or puzzle. the one toy my 3 year old doesn't go a day without is his ipod touch (with otterbox defender case for spills and drops). I'm not pitching apple or anything, but for watching his own movies, playing games, learning games, reading books, learning tech: its all in there in a package he knows to take diligent care of and can take with him anywhere. sounds expensive, but in the long run, it is the one toy he never tires of.
